Communications & Internet Access

Connectivity

Mobile connectivity is widely available across Sabah, covering most major towns and tourist areas. Service may be limited or unavailable in extremely remote or heavily forested inland regions.

Key Mobile Network Providers (Telcos)

Malaysia's primary service providers offer 4G LTE coverage throughout the state, with 5G expanding in major cities like Kota Kinabalu.

  •    Major Providers: Maxis, CelcomDigi, and U Mobile.
  •    Technology: All networks use 4G LTE / 5G standards, which are compatible with virtually all modern GSM-enabled mobile phones.
Getting Connected (SIM Cards & Prepaid Data)

Where to Buy: SIM cards are easily purchased from:

  •    Airports: Telco kiosks are available upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).
  •     Official Outlets: Major Telco shops in shopping malls.
  •    Convenience Stores: Some simple top-ups and activation kits can be found at 7-Eleven or local stores.

What You Need: By law, you must present your IC/passport for registration when purchasing a SIM card.

Wi-Fi Access

Free Wi-Fi access is common in most areas frequented by tourists:

  •    Hotels & Accommodation: Generally offered free of charge to guests.
  •    Cafes & Restaurants: Widely available in major cities and towns.
  •    Shopping Malls: Often provide complimentary Wi-Fi access.
